Sheet in PPS is one of the few structural materials that handles 220 degrees continuously without losing mechanical properties. Polyphenylene sulfide is a semi-crystalline high temperature plastic with a density around 1.36 g/cm3 and a V0 fire rating. The material does not take up water to any noticeable degree, water absorption is 0 percent according to the standard measurement, which means a milled part keeps its measurements even in a damp environment across the whole working temperature range.

Chemical resistance is unusually broad. PPS resists most acids, bases and organic solvents below 200 degrees. Only strongly oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid attack the material at higher temperature. That makes sheet in PPS suitable for components sitting in pump and valve housings in process industry, for structural parts in heat exchangers and for insulating bases in electronics that have to take solder bath temperatures. The material is also electrically insulating and keeps that property even at high temperature and humidity.

Mechanically PPS is stiff and has good creep resistance under load. That is decisive for bolted and screwed joints that have to keep their preload over time at raised temperature. Impact strength is limited compared with tougher thermoplastics, so parts should be designed without abrupt inward corners and without point loads on small surfaces. The material is not UV stable in its standard form and should be protected in outdoor use.

Machining requires carbide tools and sharp edges. PPS is abrasive against tools, especially if the material is filled. Cutting speeds are lower than for POM and PA, and you should cool with compressed air or mist lubrication. Drilling, milling and tapping work with standard technique for high temperature plastics, but always pre-drill for threads and use sharp inserts. Gluing is possible with special products, but mechanical fastening is the most common. The material cannot be welded with thermoplastic welding technique in the same way as POM or PE.

In sheet form PPS is used above all for milled components in equipment for semiconductor manufacturing, chemical process, heat exchangers and electronics. Classic examples are valve guides, holders for sensors sitting in a hot process environment, insulators in soldering equipment and bearings in pumps for aggressive liquids. Against PEEK, PPS gives a lower material cost and enough performance up to 220 degrees, while PEEK is required in continuous operation toward 260 degrees or higher. Against PVDF, PPS wins in temperature resistance, but PVDF has broader resistance to strong oxidizing acids.

The sheets are supplied in thicknesses that suit both milled structural parts and thinner insulating washers. The natural color of the material is beige, and filled PPS grades are often black. If you need a specific thickness, cut blanks or help comparing against other high temperature plastics, get in touch.

Beige and 2000x610 mm, pure PPS for larger components in hot and corrosive operation. The color is natural beige, the material unfilled.
