PMMA, polymethyl methacrylate or everyday acrylic, is extruded here, that is pressed through a die. Extruded acrylic has more even thickness tolerances, a lower price and shorter molecular chains than cast acrylic. That makes it slightly easier to thermoform but at the same time slightly less heat resistant.
The density is 1.19 g/cm³. The tensile strength is 71 MPa, the tensile modulus 3300 MPa and the flexural strength 108 MPa. The elongation at break is 4 percent and the flexural modulus 3300 MPa. The impact strength is 16 kJ/m² unnotched and 1.8 kJ/m² notched. The ball indentation hardness is 175 MPa, Vicat B50 104 °C, HDT/A 95 °C and HDT/B 100 °C.
The maximum service temperature is 70 °C continuously and 90 °C for short periods. The glass transition temperature is 110 °C and decomposition starts above 280 °C. The linear expansion is 70 x 10⁻⁶ per kelvin and the thermal conductivity 0.19 W/(m·K). The specific heat capacity is 1.47 J/(g·K). The light transmission for transparent sheets is 92 percent at 3 mm thickness and the refractive index 1.492. The water absorption is 0.2 percent after 24 hours immersed and 2.1 percent at saturation. The volume resistivity is above 10¹³ Ohm·cm, the surface resistivity above 10¹³ Ohm and the dielectric strength 30 kV/mm. CTI is 600 V. The fire rating is UL 94 HB and the building fire class B2 per DIN 4102, E per EN 13501. Transparent grades are approved for direct food contact under EU 10/2011.
The sheet is sawn, milled, drilled and polished with tools made for plastic. Thermoforming is done at temperatures around 150 to 160 °C for extruded acrylic. Acrylic adhesive with methyl methacrylate is the standard choice for bonding. After milling and bonding the material should be annealed to reduce internal stresses and avoid stress cracking.
Transparent and colored acrylic is used for signs, illuminated signs, machine guards, inspection hatches, store fittings, displays, aquariums, safety glazing, exhibition builds, furniture fronts and roof domes. The material weighs half as much as glass at the same thickness and does not break into sharp shards.
This extruded sheet is 750x600 mm in transparent, a format that suits both large surfaces and parts that are cut to your dimensions.
