The rod is compression molded or extruded PPS Mod, a modified polyphenylene sulfide where the base polymer has been reinforced with additives that raise toughness. You keep all the heat resistance and chemical resistance that make pure PPS attractive, but you get a rod that behaves more forgivingly in the lathe and in service with vibration or impact load.
The material sits around 1.36 g/cm³ in density and holds its dimensions well. The long-term service temperature is about 220 °C, which puts PPS Mod in the same temperature class as the best fluoroplastics and a couple of steps above the ordinary engineering plastics. The fire rating is V0 to UL 94, and the material is self-extinguishing once the ignition source is removed. Water absorption is negligible, so the rod does not move with moisture and works in steam environments without swelling or shrinking.
The chemical resistance is one of the real selling points of PPS. The rod stands up to strong acids, alkalis, solvents, fuels and oils across a wide temperature range. In practice the material handles most of the chemicals you meet in process industry and chemical plant, apart from certain strongly oxidizing environments and hot chlorine-bearing vapors. The combination of chemical resistance and temperature makes the rod useful for seals, plain bearings, shafts, valve parts and bushings in process pumps.
Turned parts in PPS Mod also turn up in heat-loaded machine parts such as drive wheels in oven conveyors, guide sleeves in heat exchangers and insulators in ignition equipment. The high dimensional stability means bearing and bushing dimensions hold even after long runs at high temperature. For electrical applications, the high volume resistivity and dielectric stability of PPS are put to use in insulating sleeves and supports for heat-loaded circuits.
In machining, PPS Mod behaves more kindly than pure PPS. Cutting pressure and machinability are good, but carbide is a must if the tool life is going to hold up. A sharp edge, proper chip clearance and moderate cooling air are usually enough. The material turns and drills without chipping, and internal threads hold well if you keep the rake angle tight. Polishing is possible where needed, but a lightly finished surface is the most common on technical parts.
We are happy to cut the rod to length from your drawing, or to send a full blank length. If your application calls for a specific grade, for example a glass fiber reinforced or food approved version, say the word and we will arrange the right material from the start.
