Seals and Gaskets: Which Plastic Is Best?

When choosing materials for seals and gaskets, the question arises: which plastic is actually best suited? We offer a wide range of plastics for various applications. Here, we take a closer look at some common options and their specific advantages.

PTFE: Universal Chemical Resistance

PTFE is a popular choice thanks to its excellent chemical resistance. It performs well in many different environments and at a wide range of temperatures. The material’s unique molecular structure contributes to its exceptional properties.

Is PTFE always the best choice? Sometimes other materials may be better.

PEEK: High Temperature and High Pressure

For applications requiring resistance to high temperatures and pressures, PEEK is often a superior alternative. With a melting point above 300 degrees Celsius, PEEK can withstand significantly higher heat than PTFE. Furthermore, it retains its chemical resistance even under harsh conditions.

However, PEEK is a hard material, which can make machining more difficult. There are solutions!

One option is to combine PEEK with other materials, such as PTFE, to benefit from the advantages of both materials. But what if you have to choose between PEEK and PTFE?

POM-C: Low Friction

POM-C is known for its low friction. It is often used in applications where minimal friction loss is important. The material is also relatively easy to machine, making it a popular choice amongst manufacturers.

POM-C has lower chemical resistance, which is important to bear in mind.

Here too, combining it with other materials, such as PTFE, can be a good solution. But if you have to choose between POM-C and PTFE, which should you go for?

PE-1000: High wear resistance

PE-1000 is a material with very good wear resistance. It is suitable for applications where wear and abrasion are a problem. Just like POM-C, it is relatively easy to machine.

The material has limited chemical resistance.

When selecting materials for seals and gaskets, it is important to consider all aspects of the application. Chemical resistance, temperature, pressure and wear resistance are key factors.

Plastic offers unique advantages over rubber in certain applications, particularly in terms of chemical resistance and temperature tolerance. However, there are also situations where rubber is a better option.
