Cutting plastic: Avoid damaging the material
Cutting plastic may seem simple, but the wrong technique can ruin the material. So how do you achieve a good result? We’re sharing our experience of cutting plastic.
Choosing the right blade is key
When choosing a saw blade, it is crucial to consider both the tooth pitch and the material. The tooth pitch – that is, the distance between the teeth – should be adapted to the properties of the plastic. For a soft material such as PE-HD (also known as PEHD or PE-300), a blade with a wider tooth pitch is suitable. This prevents the material from getting stuck. For harder plastics, such as PA6G, a blade with a finer tooth pitch is a better choice.
The blade material is also important. Opt for a blade made of engineering steel to ensure good durability. Coatings, such as diamond coating, can also improve performance and service life.
Feed rate: Balance is key
The feed rate – that is, how quickly you feed the plastic through the blade – plays a major role. Too high a speed can lead to melting or cracking. Too low a speed can overheat the blade and cause unnecessary wear.
How do you find the right feed rate? Try it out! Or use a guide that provides recommendations based on the material and the blade.
Cooling Prevents Problems
Cooling is important to prevent melting and cracking. Water, air or special cooling media can be used. The choice depends on the type of plastic and the saw blade.
For PE-HD, water may be sufficient. For PA6G, air may be a better option. The right cooling ensures a safe and efficient result.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Melting and cracking are common problems. Melting is often caused by an excessively high feed rate or a blade that is too hot. Cracks can occur at too low a speed or with a worn blade.
Preventative measures? Choose the correct feed rate, use suitable cooling and invest in a high-quality blade.
Different materials require different methods
Different plastics require different methods. PE-HD benefits from a blade with large teeth and an appropriate feed rate. PA6G requires a blade with finer teeth and a similarly adjusted speed. PMMA (acrylic plastic) can benefit from a diamond-coated blade and cooling with air or a refrigerant.
