PPE: The underrated high-temperature plastic
We offer many materials that can withstand high temperatures, but polyphenylene ether – or PPE for short – deserves a little extra attention. It is a material that may not be as well known as others, but which possesses a unique combination of properties. This makes PPE a good choice for a range of applications.
Hög värmebeständighet
One of the main advantages of PPE is its high heat resistance. It can withstand temperatures in excess of 200°C without losing its shape or mechanical properties. It is therefore well suited to the electronics and automotive industries, where high temperatures and vibrations are common.
Unika egenskaper
PPE has low water absorption, below 0.1 per cent. This makes it suitable for environments where moisture can be a problem. Furthermore, it has excellent dimensional stability. This means that the material retains its shape and size even when the temperature or humidity varies.
So how does PPE compare with other plastics such as PC and POM C? Polycarbonate, or PC, is also frequently used in high-temperature applications. However, PC absorbs more water than PPE, which can affect its properties in damp environments. Polyoxymethylene, or POM C, is known for its low friction and good mechanical properties. However, it has a lower heat resistance than PPE, which limits its use in high-temperature environments.
Användningsområden
We often see PPE in the electronics and automotive industries, where requirements are high. It is used, for example, in components such as sockets, connectors and other electrical connections. In the automotive industry, PPE can be found in dashboards and other interior components.
Why choose PPE? Thanks to its high heat resistance and dimensional stability, it is a good choice where high temperatures and vibrations are present. Furthermore, PPE has excellent electrical properties, which is an advantage in the electronics sector.
