Grit Progression: Step by Step

Flame Polishing of PMMA
PMMA can be polished using flame polishing. This method uses a gas flame to melt and smooth the surface. It requires a high degree of skill, but can produce excellent results.

Vapor Polishing of PC
PC can be polished using vapour polishing. This involves using a chemical solution to melt and smooth the surface. The technique is safer and more controlled than flame polishing, but still requires a high degree of skill.
When a chemical solution is used to dissolve PC, a chemical reaction takes place which makes the material smooth and even. The technique can be used to achieve high optical clarity, but here too, great care and control are required.
Diamond Polishing
Diamond polishing uses diamond grit to polish the plastic. The results can be excellent, but the method requires a great deal of experience and is often costly.
The diamond grains are very hard and can remove small irregularities and micro-damage in the material. This method also requires care and control.
Achieving Transparency After Machining
After machining a plastic component, it can be difficult to achieve a high degree of transparency. The machining process can create micro-damage and irregularities that impair the optical properties.
There are several ways to address this. You can use a combination of grinding and polishing to remove micro-damage, or a chemical solution to dissolve and smooth the surface.
