When PA6 isn’t quite up to the job: Is it time for PA66 or PA6G?

PA6 (also known as Nylon 6) is a versatile material, but its limitations become apparent in demanding environments. Consider situations involving high temperatures or the need for larger dimensions. In such cases, it may be time to look for an alternative.
PA66: For Higher Temperatures and Tougher Conditions
PA66 is a polyamide variant with improved heat resistance compared to PA6. This property makes PA66 suitable for applications where higher temperatures are present. Furthermore, PA66 often exhibits better chemical resistance and higher mechanical strength.
Is the component exposed to chemicals or higher mechanical loads? If so, PA66 may be the right choice.
PA6G: When Size Matters
PA6G (also known as cast polyamide) offers unique possibilities, particularly when it comes to large dimensions. Unlike PA6, PA6G can be manufactured in significantly larger sizes. This opens up possibilities for applications requiring robust components. The material also has a Shore hardness of 65° Shore D.
PA6G also tends to absorb less water than PA6, resulting in more stable properties over time.
Water absorption: A key factor
The material’s ability to withstand water is crucial. PA6 tends to absorb more water than both PA66 and PA6G. This can affect the material’s dimensions and mechanical properties. You should therefore consider PA66 or PA6G if moisture is a factor.
