\n\nWhy choose plastic over metal? One key factor is that plastic can have a low coefficient of friction. This leads to reduced energy consumption and less wear and tear. Furthermore, many plastics are more resistant to corrosion than metal, which is an advantage in damp or chemically aggressive environments.
\n\nPOM C: Low friction and high wear resistance
\nPOM C is an excellent choice for bearing bushes that require low friction and high wear resistance. The coefficient of friction is around 0.2–0.3, which is significantly lower than that of metals. The material also has high wear resistance, ensuring a long service life.
\n\nOne of the most important properties of POM C is its self-lubricating ability. The material contains a small amount of oil which is released during operation, reducing friction and preventing wear. In some applications, this may mean that external lubrication is not required.
\n\nPA6G: Heavy Loads and High Stress
\nPA6G is suitable for bearing bushes subjected to heavy loads and high stress. The material has high mechanical strength and good wear resistance. Furthermore, PA6G can withstand a high combination of pressure and speed.
\n\nTo ensure correct operation under heavy loads, the right design is essential. Bearing bushes made from PA6G must be of sufficient thickness and diameter to withstand the forces acting upon them. The material must also be of high quality and have a uniform structure to prevent cracking.
\n\nPEEK: Extreme Conditions and High Temperature
\nPEEK is a material that can withstand extreme conditions, such as high temperature, chemicals and radiation. It has high chemical resistance and good mechanical strength, even at high temperatures. In addition, PEEK has a high PV limit and a low coefficient of friction.
\n\nPEEK is very resistant to most chemicals and forms of radiation. This makes it suitable in, for example, the chemical industry and medicine.
\n\nPE-1000: Abrasive environments and low friction
\nPE-1000 is suitable for bearing bushings in abrasive environments that require low friction. The material has high wear resistance and good durability against wear, even in the presence of chemicals and abrasive materials. Furthermore, PE-1000 has a low coefficient of friction.
\n\nTo ensure correct operation in abrasive environments, high quality and a uniform structure are essential. The bearing bushes must also be correctly designed and manufactured.
\n\nCost and Maintenance Benefits
\nA major advantage of plastic is lower cost and reduced maintenance. Plastic bearing bushes can be manufactured using simpler methods and less material, resulting in lower costs. They can also operate for longer without maintenance, thereby reducing operating costs.
\n\nThe choice of material depends on the requirements. In some cases, metal is still the best choice, for example where extremely high mechanical strength or temperature resistance is required. However, in many situations, plastic is a good alternative, particularly where low friction, high wear resistance and good chemical resistance are important.
\n\nFor heavy loads and high speeds, PA6G may be a good choice. If extreme temperatures and chemicals are involved, PEEK may be a better option. It is important to choose the right material for each application.
\n\nShore Hardness and Material Properties
\nWhen selecting a material, it is important to consider its properties, such as Shore hardness. This is a measure of a material’s hardness and is specified in Shore D (for example, 65° Shore D). A high Shore hardness indicates a harder material, whilst a low Shore hardness indicates a softer material.
\n\nThe material must have sufficient hardness to withstand the forces. A material that's too soft will wear out too quickly, while a material that's too hard can be brittle.
