Plastic gear wheels: Material selection and dimensioning
There are several options when manufacturing plastic gear wheels. We offer a wide range of plastic materials suitable for this purpose, including POM C, PA6 and PEEK. But which material is best suited, and how do you dimension the gear wheels correctly?
Choice of material for gear wheels
Ett vanligt plastmaterial för kugghjul är POM C, en polyoximetylenbaserad plast. POM C är ett bra val för kugghjul som utsätts för lägre belastningar, eftersom det har en relativt låg hårdhet på 65° Shore D. Hårdheten påverkar kugghjulets prestanda.
För kugghjul som utsätts för högre belastningar kan PA6 vara ett bättre alternativ. PA6 har en högre hårdhet, vilket gör det mer motståndskraftigt mot nötning och slitage. PA6 är dock dyrare än POM C, så det är viktigt att överväga om den förbättrade prestandan motiverar den ökade kostnaden.
For demanding applications, PEEK may be a good choice. PEEK is a plastic with very high hardness, 90° Shore D. PEEK is also chemically resistant and lightweight, making it suitable for applications where weight and corrosion resistance are important factors.
Points to consider when sizing
When sizing plastic gears, factors such as tooth profile, backlash, thermal expansion and lubrication must be taken into account. The tooth profile is important for ensuring that the gears operate smoothly. Backlash affects the gear’s accuracy and performance.
Thermal expansion is another important factor. When a gear is exposed to heat, it can expand and change shape, which may affect its performance. It is therefore important to choose a material with low thermal expansion.
Lubrication is also important. Plastic gears may be self-lubricating or require external lubrication. Self-lubricating gears are often made from materials such as POM C or PA6, which have low friction. In more demanding applications, external lubrication may be required.
When calculating the load on a plastic gear, several factors must be taken into account, such as the gear’s size, shape and material.
