Gjuten eller extruderad PA6: skillnaden som avgör hållbarheten

PA6 finns både som gjuten och extruderad kvalitet. Vilken du ska välja beror på dimension, mekaniska krav och vilken bearbetning du ska göra.

Injection-moulded or extruded PA6: the difference that determines durability

PA6 is available in both moulded and extruded grades. Which one you should choose depends on the dimensions, mechanical requirements and the processing you intend to carry out. Both variants have their strengths, and the choice affects price, availability and performance.

Larger dimensions with moulded PA6

PA6 G is moulded. This means it can be supplied in significantly larger dimensions than extruded PA6. If you need thick sheets, large tubes or billets that are not available in an extruded form, moulded PA6 is often the only option.

However, the moulding process can result in internal stresses and pores. This affects machinability and mechanical uniformity. For parts requiring very high precision or with thin walls, extruded PA6 may be a better choice.

Moulded PA6 is also usually more expensive per kilogram than extruded PA6, but the cost must be weighed against the fact that you can achieve shapes that are not otherwise available. For prototypes, repair parts and large wear parts, moulded PA6 is a practical choice.

Extruded PA6 provides a more uniform structure

Extruded PA6 is forced through a die. This results in a more homogeneous structure with fewer internal stresses. The result is a material that behaves more predictably during turning, milling and threading.

Extruded PA6 is therefore well suited to components where dimensional accuracy and surface quality are important. It is available in sheets, rods and tubes in standard dimensions. Delivery times are often shorter than for moulded PA6 as the material is held in stock.

For the mass production of precision components, extruded PA6 is often the most cost-effective choice. The material is also more readily available in different colours and with various additives.

When should you choose which grade?

Choose cast PA6 when you need large formats or dimensions outside the standard range. Choose extruded PA6 when you need high precision, consistent quality and small to medium-sized components.

Both variants can be supplied with additives such as glass fibre, dry lubricant or oil to improve certain properties. PA6 E MoS2 is an example of an extruded grade with added dry lubricant for more demanding sliding and wear applications.

Before ordering, you should always check which grade is available in the correct dimensions. Cast PA6 may have a different colour and surface finish to extruded PA6. If appearance is important, ask for a sample.

Machining and surface finish

Moulded PA6 can be slightly more difficult to turn and mill due to internal stresses. Tools may need sharpening more frequently, and clamping is more important to prevent deformation. Extruded PA6 often produces a smoother surface immediately after machining.

Both variants can be moisture-adjusted to increase impact resistance. Dry nylon is more brittle than moisture-adjusted nylon. If you machine dry material, the part may be more prone to cracking during assembly.

Quality and surface finish

Moulded PA6 may have a different surface finish to extruded PA6. Moulded surfaces are often more matt and may have small marks from the mould. Extruded surfaces are usually smoother and more consistent from piece to piece.

If the surface is to be visible or undergo further processing, it is worth requesting a sample. The colour may also differ between cast and extruded material, even within the same polymer grade.

When to order

Order extruded PA6 when you need fast delivery and standard dimensions. Order moulded PA6 when you need large or unusual dimensions that are not in stock. Bear in mind that moulded materials often have longer lead times.

Whichever grade you choose, you should specify the application, operating temperature and whether the component will come into contact with food or chemicals. With the right information, the supplier can recommend the correct grade and dimensions.

Dimensions affect both the price and availability of PA6. Moulded PA6 can be manufactured in very large thicknesses and diameters, which is suitable when you need large sheets or thick rods. Extruded PA6 is usually available in standard dimensions with shorter lead times.

Cast PA6 generally has a higher molecular weight and better impact resistance, but can be more difficult to machine evenly. Extruded PA6 has a more uniform structure and is well suited to turning and milling in precision applications.
