Electrical insulation using plastics: materials and properties
We offer a wide range of plastic materials suitable for electrical insulation. But which properties are important when choosing the right material for your specific application? Here, we take a closer look at various plastic materials and their properties in relation to electrical insulation.
Material och egenskaper
Several materials can be used for electrical insulation, such as POM C, PA6G, PTFE, PET and PEEK. Each material has its own unique properties that make it suitable for specific applications. PTFE, for example, has a very low coefficient of friction and is often used in applications involving moving parts.
Dielectric strength is an important property. It is a measure of a material’s ability to withstand electric fields without breakdown. Materials such as POM C and PA6G have a dielectric strength of up to 50 kV/mm.
Volume resistivity is also important. It is a measure of a material’s ability to resist electric current. Materials such as POM C and PA6G have high volume resistivity, making them suitable for use in high-voltage environments.
- POM C: dielektrisk styrka upp till 50 kV/mm, volymresistivitet 10^14 Ohm cm, spårningsmotstånd enligt IEC 60112
- PA6G: dielektrisk styrka upp till 50 kV/mm, volymresistivitet 10^14 Ohm cm, spårningsmotstånd enligt IEC 60112
- PTFE: dielectric strength up to 60 kV/mm, volume resistivity 10¹⁸ Ω·cm, tracking resistance in accordance with IEC 60112
- PET: dielektrisk styrka upp till 60 kV/mm, volymresistivitet 10^16 Ohm cm, spårningsmotstånd enligt IEC 60112
- PTFE: dielektrisk styrka upp till 60 kV/mm, volymresistivitet 10^18 Ohm cm, spårningsmotstånd enligt IEC 60112
Tillämpningar
Our materials are used in a wide range of applications, such as in switchgear, transformers and connectors. In these cases, it is important that the material has good insulating properties to prevent electric shocks and fire.
When selecting materials, you should take into account aspects such as dielectric strength, volume resistivity, tracking resistance and Shore hardness. We also stock materials with different Shore hardness grades, such as 65° Shore D, which may be relevant. You should also bear in mind the specific requirements of the application, such as high temperatures or exposure to chemicals.
