Knobs HC11 bushing black

Knobs in the HC11 series are mushroom shaped grip knobs in PA6 with a threaded brass bushing. The knob screws onto a threaded stud and gives the fingers something solid to pull, push and turn; a small detail that decides how a whole piece of equipment feels to use. The series belongs among standard machine elements, finished and proven parts that the designer puts into the bill of materials instead of drawing their own.

The mushroom shape is chosen with care. The wide, domed head sits against the fingertips with no sharp transitions, and the grip works just as well from above as from the side. The series comes in two diameters; 22 mm is enough for a steady two-finger grip with a low overall height of 16.5 mm, while 32 mm gives more to take hold of. The shape also gives enough torque to tighten a clamp on a sensor bracket without tools.

The brass bushing is what makes the thread last. Plastic threads wear out when a knob is screwed on and off many times, but here the threads sit in metal; the knob takes daily removal year after year without going loose. Brass does not seize against a steel thread in damp conditions either, so the knob can always be unscrewed. The bushing is molded in during manufacture and is therefore fixed in the body.

The thread options follow the size: the 22 body comes with M4, M5 or M6 and the 32 body with M6 or M8, five versions in total. You pick the version as a variant on the product page; all of them are black with a matte surface. Several threads in the same outside dimension make it easy to standardize, so the same knob can come back through the whole design even if the studs vary.

The uses are found in every machine shop and laboratory: locking knobs on protective covers, adjusting screws on sensors and fixtures, lids that are opened at daily checks, panel fasteners on equipment and battery covers on instruments. A typical example is the protective cover that is lifted off at every cleaning; four knobs instead of four hex socket screws save a moment every day and remove the tool that is always somewhere else. It is worth doing the math on the time; a few seconds per screw becomes hours over a year.

The mushroom knob is quite simply the standard choice when something has to be opened often, by hand and without tools.

Assembly needs no instruction: screw the knob onto the stud. If you want it to stay put permanently you lock it with a drop of thread locker; if it is to be removed often you leave the thread dry. There is no tightening torque to think about, hand force is the whole point.

The length of the stud is the only thing to check before buying. The thread depth is limited, 11 mm on the 22 version, and a stud that sticks out further bottoms out in the bushing before the knob sits against the surface; cut the stud or put a washer in between, otherwise the knob never really tightens. The same check applies when replacing knobs on older equipment, where the stud can be both unmarked and worn.

The material takes everyday life. PA6 is not affected by hand sweat, cleaning agents or oily fingers, and the matte surface keeps its grip after years of handling. If a knob is damaged after many years it is replaced in seconds; unscrew, screw on, done.
