Threaded plugs SP31 are protective plugs in HDPE with an O-ring that seals as the plug is tightened in the threaded hole. That makes the series a step up from a plain protective plug: the thread is protected against dirt and knocks as usual, but the port is closed off against moisture, oil and dust as well. A hex grip and a screwdriver slot in the top mean the plug can be fitted and removed with tools instead of by hand.
The series spans 17 sizes from M8 to M52. The main diameter runs from 12.5 to 60 mm and the height from 6 to 30 mm depending on thread size; the smaller sizes have a very low build, which is handy where several ports sit close together. The color is matte yellow, a signal color that is easy to inspect and hard to miss at final assembly. HDPE gives the plug a stiffness that softer protective plugs lack. The material takes tool tightening without the thread in the plastic rounding off, keeps the O-ring evenly compressed over time and stands up to oils, greases, washing chemicals and most liquids around machinery and hydraulics. The combination is made for parts that are handled roughly: machine washed, preserved, stacked and shipped.
Typical uses are found above all around hydraulics and power transmission. Hydraulic manifolds and valve bodies whose ports have to be kept free of particles and moisture between machining and assembly; a metal chip or a spot of rust in the wrong port costs many times more than the plug that would have stopped it. Gearboxes and pumps with oil ports that have to sit in storage or be shipped without letting condensation in. Machines that are washed with high pressure, where open threaded holes otherwise fill with water and detergent. The tool grip is more than a convenience. The hex gives repeatable tightening in production, and the screwdriver slot saves the removal when the plug has sat tight for six months; you avoid prying at the edge of the hole with a knife. In cramped port positions where a wrench cannot reach, an ordinary flat screwdriver is enough.
Choosing right is easy since the plug follows the nominal thread size directly; the M16 plug fits the M16 hole without measuring. If you need to protect external threads on the same part at the same time, there are sealing threaded caps in the matching yellow version in the same family, and for simpler needs without a sealing requirement there are softer plugs in LDPE. When they are reused in sealing applications the O-ring should be checked; it wears before the plug itself.
The span from M8 to M52 covers most things from small sensor ports to coarse plug holes in pump housings, and the low overall heights at the bottom of the series mean that plugged parts can still be stacked flat on a pallet. That sounds trivial, but anyone who has packed castings with protectors sticking out knows how much load space is otherwise lost. A plug that builds six millimeters solves the problem already in the packaging design. It is worth making the plugging its own planning step right after washing, while the ports are still guaranteed clean inside.
