Polycarbonate and acrylic are both transparent, but they can withstand different types of stress. Here’s how to choose the right material for your application. Both materials let light through, but they have different strengths and weaknesses.

Impact resistance or maximum clarity?

When choosing a transparent plastic, the choice is often between PC and PMMA. PC, or polycarbonate, is impact-resistant. It withstands impacts and blows that would shatter glass or acrylic. This makes PC a common choice for machine guards, safety windows and other components where safety is a priority.

PMMA, or acrylic, offers better light transmission and surface properties. It can be easily polished to a high gloss and is used where appearance and clarity are more important than impact absorption. PMMA also has a harder surface than PC, which provides better scratch resistance.

A PC sheet can be shaped and bent without cracking, making the material flexible in design. PMMA is more brittle and requires a larger radius when cold-bent. In summary: choose PC when impact resistance and formability are important. Choose PMMA when clarity, surface finish and UV resistance are priorities.

Weather and UV: how long will it be left outdoors?

Signs, windows and other outdoor features are exposed to the sun and the elements. PMMA withstands UV light well and retains its clarity for a long time. Outdoors, PMMA is often used for shop windows, signs and displays. The material yellows slowly and retains much of its transparency for many years.

PC yellows more quickly in direct sunlight if it is not UV-protected. For outdoor use, you should therefore choose a UV-stabilised grade of PC. Without UV protection, PC is best suited for indoor use or in sheltered environments. UV-protected PC is nevertheless often used outdoors in roofs and canopies as it withstands snow loads and hail better than PMMA.

If the component is to be exposed to direct sunlight for a long time and is not subject to impact, PMMA is the natural choice. If there is a risk of knocks, impacts or snow loads, UV-protected PC is a better alternative.

Machining and cleaning

PMMA can be milled, sawn, drilled and polished. It is harder than PC and produces a glossy finish after polishing. When drilling and milling, it is important to use sharp tools to avoid cracks and chipping. PMMA can also be thermoformed and bonded using solvents.

PC is more durable but scratches more easily. When machining PC, it is important to use the correct tools and cooling to avoid stress in the material. PC can be cold-formed up to a certain radius and thermoformed at higher temperatures.

Both materials can be cleaned with mild detergents. Avoid solvents and abrasive agents as they can dull or damage the surface. For PC in particular, avoid acetone and ammonia-based cleaning agents, as these can cause the material to crack.

Price and availability

PMMA is usually cheaper than PC in standard grades. PC with UV protection or other additives can cost considerably more. Both materials are available as sheets, rods and tubes in a range of dimensions.

When choosing the thickness, you should consider both load and safety. A machine guard made of PC needs to be thick enough to withstand the impact energy that may occur. A sign made of PMMA can be thinner as the loads are lower.

When choosing between the materials, you should start by asking: does the component need to withstand impacts, or should it be as clear and glossy as possible? The answer will usually point you towards the right material.

How to order the right grade

Transparent plastic is available in many variants beyond standard PC and PMMA. You can choose UV-stabilised PC for outdoor use, impact-resistant PMMA for exposed signage, or food-grade grades for contact with food. Always choose based on the application rather than the appearance.

When ordering sheets or rods, you should check thickness tolerances and surface quality. Cast PMMA may contain internal stresses that affect machining, whilst extruded PMMA is usually more homogeneous. PC is more sensitive to moisture during machining and should be dried before turning or milling.
